A fort inhabited by families

Built in 1558, Yongchang was financed by members of the Wang family to resist coastal raiders. Its streets and canals follow a grid, with bridges crossing the waterways and a moat surrounding the fort. Four land gates and four water gates show how defence was fitted around movement through the settlement. Old residences, ancestral halls and wells add a domestic scale to the enclosure.

Streams and local crafts

Yaoxi includes Jinzhong Waterfall (金钟瀑) and Longgang Hill (龙岗山). A 2023 tourism account identifies architectural woodcarving and inlaid lacquer painting studios in the district’s intangible heritage experience gallery.
