A scholar’s compound
Built in 1888 by Sun Yiyan (孙衣言) and his son Sun Yirang (孙诒让), Yuhai combines a library, residence and private garden. Its buildings draw on domestic architecture from southern Zhejiang (浙江). An entrance hall, reception hall, eastern and western corridors, main building and side rooms follow its central axis.
Mountain and fields
Shengjing Mountain has historic buildings dating from the Song period onward, including its stone temple. Caocun’s rice fields, small bridges and waterways present a different landscape. Its traditions of learning sit alongside southern boxing and lantern culture, making village heritage as much a part of the countryside as the fields themselves.
