About Qujiang Pool Heritage Park
The present park opened in 2008 and was designed around upper and lower lake sections. It is a modern landscape recalling a historical place, rather than an intact Tang garden. The long water edge is its main attraction: changing perspectives across the two pools make a more satisfying visit than seeking a single monument.
The site's history runs through the Qin, Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. In the Qin dynasty it was a natural pond, near the detached Yichun Palace (宜春宫). During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han (汉武帝), it became known as Qujiang (曲江, 'winding river') because its winding banks resembled the river at Guangling (广陵). The Sui dynasty incorporated the pool within the walls of its new capital, Daxing (大兴城), and renamed it Furong Pool (芙蓉池); the Tang dynasty then enlarged it into a water area of a thousand mu (亩), a destination for excursions.
During the prosperous Tang era, noble women held leisurely banquets at Qujiang, and successful examination candidates gathered there afterward for group feasts; the spot was locally counted among the 'eight scenic spots of Chang'an' (长安八景) and was celebrated through allusions such as Qujiang Liuyin (曲江流饮) and Yanta Timing (雁塔题名). The present park covers 471 mu (亩) and was designed by architect Zhang Jinqiu (张锦秋). Its water surface alone runs 1,088 meters (3,570 feet) north to south, with an east-west width reaching 552 meters (1,811 feet) at its widest, divided into upper and lower pools.
