Kilns, workshops and homes
At Yaotou Village (尧头村), surviving remains include firing kilns, pottery workshops and old dwellings. The kilns produced storage jars, basins, bowls and bottles. Black-glazed ware is characteristic, though makers also produced white and celadon wares. Historical accounts trace production to the Tang dynasty (唐代), but China Daily notes that securely identified Tang products have not been found at the kiln site; a small number of Yuan-period (元代) pieces have been collected locally.
Clay, glaze and fire
Makers throw vessels, dry and trim them, then apply glaze. Local minerals and plants provide glaze ingredients. Decoration includes carved and impressed patterns, peonies, birds, animals and pomegranates. Firing takes place in downdraught mantou kilns (馒头窑). The site also offers ceramic-making experiences and a black-ware exhibition and sales centre.
