A palace site beneath the museum
The Tianfei Palace Archaeological Museum (元明清天妃宫遗址博物馆) was established on the original palace site in 2002. Its four exhibition themes address the sea, Mazu (妈祖), the river-and-sea city and the archaeological remains. The palace’s Mazu worship grew with maritime grain transport: boat crews sought the goddess’s protection on hazardous voyages. In 2006, the palace site entered the sixth national list of major protected cultural sites.
Maritime and military traces
In 2017, the museum and other Tianjin museums selected 189 metal artefacts or sets from the excavated finds for conservation, spanning the Western Zhou through Qing periods. Hedong also contains the history of the Beiyang Military Academy (北洋武备学堂), founded by Li Hongzhang (李鸿章) in 1885 on the former Liushu Imperial Lodge (柳墅行宫) site. Its teachers included instructors recruited from Germany.
