A ferry town turned trading centre
The name Guandu dates from the Song period. Yuan-period work on the waterways reduced the extent of Dianchi Lake (滇池), leaving the town away from the shore and ending its role as a lake ferry port. Its position on overland routes subsequently helped it develop into a busy trading settlement during the Ming and Qing periods.
Buildings and craft workshops
The old town preserves yikeyin courtyard houses (一颗印民居), Jingang Pagoda at Miaozhan Temple (妙湛寺金刚塔), Tuzhu Temple (土主庙) and Wenming Pavilion (文明阁). At Yunzi Academy (云子棋院), visitors can see and try making Yunnan Go stones. The Wutong Zouyin Transmission Hall (乌铜走银传习馆) displays dark copper objects decorated with contrasting silver or gold patterns.
