Setting and landscape

Jingxi covers about 3,327 square kilometres and has a 152.5-kilometre frontier with three districts of Vietnam's Cao Bang Province (高平省). Its Chinese neighbours are Napo (那坡), Debao (德保), Tiandeng (天等), Daxin (大新), Baise's Youjiang District (右江区) and Funing (富宁) in Yunnan. The mean annual temperature is 19.1°C.

More than 90 percent of the people are Zhuang, and everyday speech is a southern Zhuang dialect locally called Yang (仰话).

History

Under the Tang, Guichun Prefecture (归淳州) was set up in the east of today's territory in 714 and renamed Guishun (归顺州) around 806. In 1496, after its Cen (岑) native officials led troops with distinction, Shun'an (顺安峒) was raised to the native prefecture of Guishun; direct imperial rule came in 1729. Jingxi County was created in 1913, its name taken from the old town name Jingcheng (靖城) and its place in western Guangxi. It became a county-level city on 1 August 2015.

What to see

Tongling Grand Canyon (通灵大峡谷) in Hurun (湖润镇), a national AAAA scenic area on the border, runs for 3.8 kilometres through Tongling Gorge and Nianba Gorge (念八峡), joined by an underground river and tunnels. Its waterfall drops 188.6 metres in a single fall, and the forested gorge holds more than 2,300 plant species, about 600 of them rare or wild medicinal plants, which earned it the title "China Zhuang Medicine Garden" (中国壮药园).

E'quan (鹅泉) is a spring that rises from an underground river in karst peak-forest country; the city's media centre calls it one of the three famous springs of southwest China, and an old bridge of 15 arches is reflected in its water. In Jiuzhou old town (旧州古镇) the streets are hung with embroidered balls (绣球), and visitors can cut and sew one themselves.

Quyang Lake (渠洋湖), an AAA scenic area in Quyang town 28 kilometres from the city, is a karst plateau reservoir about 15 kilometres long, shaped like two joined gourds and dotted with islands and Zhuang villages.

Food and local products

Jingxi rice dumplings (靖西米饺) wrap pork, wood-ear fungus and water chestnut in a translucent rice skin and are dipped in sauce. Two fried snacks carry names transliterated from Zhuang: fanjidu (番叽嘟), glutinous-rice dough around sweet potato, dipped in sugar, and moumie (哞咩), glutinous-rice flour and sweet potato shaped into cattle and sheep and fried. The Jingxi speckled duck (靖西大麻鸭), locally called the "horse duck" for its size, is a geographical-indication breed raised for about 120 days and prized for white-cut duck.
