Youjiang District 右江区

History

The Baise Uprising took place at the end of 1929, with Deng Xiaoping (邓小平), then using the name Deng Bin (邓斌), as the Party centre's representative. On 11 December 1929 the Seventh Red Army (红七军) was formed in Baise, with Zhang Yunyi (张云逸) as its commander. The district in its present form dates from 2003, when the former county-level city of Baise, itself upgraded from Baise County in 1983, became Youjiang District of the new prefecture-level city.

What to see

The Yuedong Guild Hall (粤东会馆), built at the end of the Ming dynasty as a meeting house for merchants from Guangdong and Guangxi trading with Yunnan and Guizhou, served as the uprising's headquarters and the Seventh Red Army's command; it was listed as a national key cultural relic in 1988. The Baise Uprising Memorial Museum (百色起义纪念馆) at 112 Chengdong Avenue (城东大道) held 3,973 items at the end of 2019, organised in halls on the uprising, its martyrs and Deng Xiaoping.

Chengbi Lake (澄碧湖), a reservoir holding 1.15 billion cubic metres, has forest cover of more than 92 percent. The Dawangling (大王岭) drift runs through a forested gorge that the district calls the first primeval-forest rafting gorge in Guangxi. Fulu River National Wetland Park (福禄河国家湿地公园) records 16 animal species under second-class national protection, among them the Eurasian spoonbill, the black baza and the tiger frog. On Jinwu Hill (金屋山), a kilometre southeast of Baise town, the three-storey Nange Pavilion (南阁亭) was destroyed when a bowl factory was built there in 1954 and rebuilt in 2001.

Food and local products

Nabi speckled duck (那毕麻鸭) comes from Longjing (龙景街道), formerly Nabi township, where ducks forage in the rice paddies for 90 to 100 days. Longchuan (龙川镇) is known for camellia oil and white rice, including a fragrant glutinous rice, and Daleng (大楞乡) is called the "home of star anise". The Zhuang momie (麽乜) is a cloth figure hugging a sun, stuffed with more than ten herbs such as mugwort and sweet flag, and worn and exchanged at weddings, the Dragon Boat Festival and other festive days.

Getting oriented

National roads 323 and 324, the Nanning–Kunming railway and the Nanning–Kunming and Longlin–Baise expressways cross the district, and Baise airport lies about 50 kilometres away. Ships of 1,000 tonnes can sail from here down to Nanning and Guangzhou.
