History
Known in the past as Lizhou (荔州), Lipu became an administrative unit in the sixth year of the Yuanding reign of the Han, 111 BC, and the city government calls it one of the early centres of Lingnan (岭南) culture. It was a county until August 2018, when the State Council replaced it with a county-level city; the government notes that it was the first county in Guangxi to become a city in that new round of changes and is the only county-level city under Guilin. Han, Zhuang, Miao and Yao are among the 15 ethnic groups living here.
What to see
Lipu has four national 4A scenic areas: Silver Cave (银子岩), Fengyu Cave (丰鱼岩), Li Jiang Wan (荔江湾) and the Lishui Qingshan–Lijiang National Wetland Park (荔水青山·荔江国家湿地公园); Tianhe Waterfall (天河瀑布) is rated 3A. The Lijiang River (荔江) wetland park is on the national list of important wetlands. Silver Cave is in Maling (马岭镇). At the end of 2025 the scenic area carried out a lighting overhaul of 18 of the cave's best-known formations and introduced 3D projection mapping, which casts scenes such as the Northern Song painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (千里江山图) onto the cave walls, Guangxi Daily reports.
Food and local products
Lipu taro, Lipu sugar tangerines (荔浦砂糖桔) and Lipu water chestnuts (荔浦马蹄) are called the three treasures of Lipu, and all three hold national geographical-indication status. The city has held nine Lipu taro culture festivals. Summer oranges, ginger, shatian pomelo, orchids and edible fungi are also grown here, and its factories make wooden clothes hangers.
Getting oriented
Lipu lies east of Liuzhou and west of Hezhou, and the Lipu River (荔浦河) flows through it. National highways 321 and 323 meet in the middle of the urban area, and the Hohhot–Beihai and Shantou–Kunming expressways cross the city.
