Setting and landscape
The district sits at 1,200 to 1,600 metres in the middle of Guizhou. The district government describes a humid subtropical monsoon climate without harsh winters or hot summers, an average annual temperature of 14°C and no recorded temperature above 35°C.
History
The area was known in the past as Anshun zhou, then as the home district of Anshun prefecture (安顺府); in the Republican era it became Anshun County. It later became the county-level city of Anshun, and in June 2000, when a prefecture-level Anshun was set up, that city's area became Xixiu District.
Tunpu villages go back to the reign of the Ming founder Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋), who, after his conquest of the region, stationed Han soldiers from the lower Yangtze region in garrison forts along the old Yunnan–Guizhou post road. More than 300 such villages lie on the plain between Guiyang (贵阳) and Anshun, most named with military words such as tun (屯) or bao (堡).
What to see
Yunfeng Tunpu (云峰屯堡), Jiuzhou Ancient Town (旧州古镇) and Hongshan Lake Park (虹山湖公园) are the district's three 4A scenic areas, and the former home of Wang Ruofei (王若飞故居) is a red-heritage site. The district government also lists the Han tombs at Ninggu (宁谷古汉墓遗址), the Wu temple (武庙), the old buildings of Yunshantun (云山屯古建筑群), the Baojiatun waterworks (鲍家屯水利工程), and the White Pagoda and Yuantong Temple on Xixiu Hill (西秀山白塔与圆通寺) among its national and provincial protected sites.
The Anshun Confucian Temple (安顺文庙) was founded in 1394 and became a national key protected site in 2001. It has five courtyards; its stone carvings survive from the Ming, while the other buildings date from the Qing or later.
Getting oriented
The Shanghai–Kunming expressway and national roads 320 and 321 cross the district, and the district government names the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed railway among the lines now open. Huangguoshu Airport, shared by military and civil flights, is in the district; the district government puts Guiyang's Longdongbao Airport 90 kilometres away.
