History
In the Western Han the area held two counties, Ningping (宁平) and Yilu (宜禄), whose seats were at today's Ningping and Yilu (宜路) towns. After the Wei of the Three Kingdoms abolished them, the land was divided between Wuping (武平) and Ku (苦县) counties. The Sui set up Dan County (郸县) in 586, the first county seat on the site of Dancheng, but the Tang abolished it and split the land among neighbouring counties. In May 1951 parts of Luyi (鹿邑), Huaiyang (淮阳) and Shenqiu (沈丘) were combined into a Dancheng office of county rank, which became Dancheng County in August 1952.
What to see
The Duanzhai Site (段寨遗址), a Neolithic site, is the county's national key protected site, listed in the seventh batch. Two further sites are on Henan's provincial list: the Jizhong Site (汲冢遗址), in the province's first batch, and the Ningping Ancient City (宁平故城) in Ningping town, an ancient city site dated from the Warring States to the Jin dynasty and listed by the Henan provincial government in January 2016.

The Zhoukou city government names Dancheng sweet potatoes (郸城红薯) among the national geographical-indication farm products that lead the city's agriculture.
Getting oriented
National Highways 220 and 344 and the Shangqiu–Gushi Expressway (商固高速) pass through the county.
