Xiaoting District 猇亭区

Xiaoting District (猇亭区) is the southeastern end of urban Yichang (宜昌), with the Yangtze on its west and Honghuatao (红花套镇) in Yidu (宜都市) facing it across the river. The district government traces the name to the Western Han: the character xiao (猇) means a tiger’s roar, and a ting (亭) was a post set every ten li.

History

Stone tools from the Neolithic site at Majiaxi (马家溪) show people living here more than 5,000 years ago. The area was once called the western frontier of Chu (楚之西塞), and the Battle of Xiaoting (猇亭之战) of the Three Kingdoms period was fought here. Xiaoting is an old name for Gulaobei (古老背), which survives as the name of one of the three subdistricts.

In the Republican era most of the area belonged to Yidu County. In December 1982 the Gulaobei commune was transferred from Yidu to Zhijiang County (枝江县) and renamed after Xiaoting. An economic and technological development zone opened in January 1992, and the State Council approved Xiaoting District in March 1995.

Getting oriented

The district borders Yajueling (鸦鹊岭镇) in Yiling District (夷陵区) to the east, Baiyang (白洋镇) in Zhijiang to the south and Wujiagang District (伍家岗区) to the north. It is split into the Gulaobei, Yunchi (云池) and Huya (虎牙) subdistricts. Yichang Three Gorges Airport (三峡国际机场) and the Yunchi deep-water port are both inside it, and National Highway 318 and the Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway (沪渝高速) meet here.

The district government describes Xiaoting as a major industrial district. The Yichang city government lists Xingfa (兴发), GAC (广汽), Angel Yeast (安琪) and CSG Glass (南玻) among the companies based here. Xiaoting has a GAC Trumpchi (广汽传祺) vehicle plant and the main production base of Angel Yeast, and in 2023 it was named China's first "Organic Silicon Innovation Capital".
