Setting and landscape
Xinhua puts Zixi's forest cover at 87.7 percent, with 550,000 mu of moso bamboo alone. The county holds the Matoushan (马头山) national nature reserve, the Qingliangshan (清凉山) national forest park and the Jiulong Lake (九龙湖) national wetland park. In 2002 it adopted a policy of putting ecology first, shutting chemical and pesticide plants and turning away a thermal power station.
History
The county was carved out of Nancheng (南城) in 1578, under the Ming, as Luxi County (泸溪县) of Jianchang Prefecture (建昌府). In 1913 it was renamed Zixi, because a Luxi County already existed in Hunan. The county seat is Hecheng town (鹤城镇).
What to see
Mount Dajue is a national 5A scenic area. Its gorge rafting run is 3.6 km long with a 188 m drop and is promoted as the first drift in Asia, and the mountain also has an international paragliding base. The county tourism bureau also points visitors to the Yulong Bay (御龙湾) area, the Dajuexi (大觉溪) tourist area, the Nanyuan (南源) homestays and the old-growth forest of Matoushan. On the industrial side, the county's bamboo technology park, which Xinhua describes as China's first zero-carbon park built on replacing plastic with bamboo, includes a bamboo technology museum.
Food and local products
Zixi calls itself China's home of bread (中国面包之乡). Xinhua reports that more than 40,000 people from the county work in the bread trade and run over 16,000 bakeries in more than 1,000 Chinese cities. Zixi white tea (资溪白茶) is a national geographical-indication product.
