What to see
The riverfront is organised as the Xunyang River scenic area, part of the Jiujiang section of the Yangtze National Cultural Park. The district government names Pipa Pavilion (琵琶亭), Suojiang Tower (锁江楼) and Xunyang Tower (浔阳楼) as its three landmarks.
Pipa Pavilion recalls the Tang poet Bai Juyi (白居易), who was demoted to Jiangzhou in 815 and the next autumn, seeing off a guest on the river at night, heard someone playing the pipa lute on a boat and wrote for the player "Song of the Pipa" (琵琶行). The pavilion has moved several times along the river; the present Tang-style building was rebuilt in 2012, stands 27 metres high, and its scenic area opened in April 2017. Evenings bring a light show based on the poem.
Xunyang Tower stands on the Yangtze bank outside Jiuhua Gate (九华门). Its founding date is unknown, but it appears in writing by the Tang official Wei Yingwu (韦应物) and Bai Juyi, and in the novel Water Margin (水浒传), where Song Jiang writes his rebellious poem there. The city government rebuilt it in 1989 as a tower 21 metres high.
History
The Treaty of Tianjin of 1858 let Britain open up to three ports on the Yangtze between Hankou and the sea, and in 1861 Harry Parkes (巴夏礼) marked out a British concession at Jiujiang, the city's only foreign concession. By 1867 it had a river wharf and a grid of streets, with riverside lots leased to British firms such as Jardine Matheson and Swire. The Wuhan Nationalist government took it back on 15 March 1927. A few buildings survive as protected relics, and four of them, including the former Asiatic Petroleum apartments and the former Japanese consulate, house the Jiujiang Former Concession Museum (九江租界旧址博物馆), opened in 2018 at 14 Penpu Road.
Getting oriented
At the core of the Dazhong Road historic quarter (大中路历史文化街区) is Penpu community (湓浦社区), one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Jiujiang. Its blue-flagstone lanes are lined with restored Ming- and Qing-style buildings, and the community counts 35 cultural relics and 55 historic buildings. Jiujiang South railway station on the Beijing-Kowloon line is in the district.

In Xunyang district, Jiujiang, the district government documents Dazhong Road as a historic and cultural quarter holding former foreign trading-house and consulate buildings from after the city was opened to foreign trade, and separately presents Yuliang South Road as a provincial historic and cultural quarter listed in its own right. None of the district government pages used here publishes the catalogue's former-concession label or sets out the extent of the old concession, which the district's account of the port mentions only as the base from which foreign interests built modern wharves, so this entry describes the two documented quarters rather than a mapped concession area.
