History
Yangqiu County (阳丘县) was set up here in 153 BC; the Liu Song state later set up Gaotang County (高唐县), and in 596 the Sui renamed it Zhangqiu. From the Northern Song to the Qing it belonged to Jinan prefecture. Zhangqiu became a county-level city in 1992 and, with State Council approval in September 2016, a district of Jinan.
What to see
The Chengziya Site (城子崖遗址) lies on a rectangular rise beside the Wuyuan River (武原河) in Longshan subdistrict. The archaeologist Wu Jinding (吴金鼎) found it in 1928 and the culture it represents was named Longshan after the place. It was on the first national list of protected sites in 1961, and a rammed-earth town wall about 450 m by 390 m has been found around it. Other national sites include the Han-dynasty city of Dongpingling (东平陵故城) on the west bank of the Juye River (巨野河) and the Neolithic Jiaojia site (焦家遗址).
Baimai Spring (百脉泉), one of Jinan's 72 named springs, sits inside Longquan Temple (龙泉寺) in Baimai Spring Park, laid out around it in 1986; a garden in memory of Li Qingzhao stands at its north-west corner. Zhujiayu village (朱家峪村) in Guanzhuang keeps several Qing buildings that Jinan listed as protected sites in December 2013, among them the Wenchang Pavilion (文昌阁), the Zhu family ancestral hall (朱氏家祠) and the former Shanyin Primary School (山阴小学).
Food and local products
Local products include Zhangqiu scallions (章丘大葱), Mingshui fragrant rice (明水香稻), Longshan millet (龙山小米) and Huangjia roast meat (黄家烤肉); local iron goes into Zhangqiu iron woks (章丘铁锅). Zhangqiu xinzi (章丘芯子), a Spring Festival parade in which costumed children are carried on raised iron frames, is on the national intangible-heritage list; it dates from the Ming and is performed in places including Sandefan village (三德范村) of Wenzu (文祖).
Getting oriented
Zhangqiu Station, on the Qingdao-Jinan (Jiaoji) railway, lies west of the town centre. Zhangqiu North, about 10 km north, is on the Jinan-Qingdao high-speed line, and Zhangqiu South, about 10 km south, is on the Jinan-Laiwu high-speed line. Jinan Metro Line 8 links western Zhangqiu with eastern Jinan.
