History
Changqing was first set up as a county under the Sui dynasty, as part of Jibei Commandery (济北郡). From the Northern Song through the Jin it was governed from Jinan Prefecture (济南府). In 2001 the county was abolished and its territory became Jinan's Changqing District. The district counts 52 protected heritage sites, four of them on the national list.
What to see
Lingyan Temple, in the Wande (万德) area northwest of Mount Tai, was founded in the Eastern Jin, rebuilt from 520 under the Northern Wei and reached its height in the Tang. It is named with Guoqing Temple (国清寺) in Tiantai (天台), Yuquan Temple (玉泉寺) in Jiangling (江陵) and Qixia Temple (栖霞寺) in Nanjing as the 'four famous temples under heaven'. The Thousand Buddha Hall (千佛殿) keeps forty clay arhat figures, thirty-two made in the Song and eight in the Ming; Liang Qichao (梁启超) called them the finest clay sculpture in the land. Northwest of the hall rises the Bizhi Pagoda (辟支塔), an octagonal nine-storey brick tower 55.7 metres high, built between 994 and 1057. The temple entered the national heritage list in its second batch, and the Ming writer Wang Shizhen (王世贞) held that climbing Mount Tai without reaching Lingyan made an incomplete trip.
In Xiaoli (孝里) subdistrict, the Guo Family Stone Shrine (孝堂山郭氏墓石祠) on Xiaotang Hill was built in the early Eastern Han and is regarded as the oldest surviving above-ground house-type building in China; it joined the first national heritage list in 1961. Tradition ties it to the filial son Guo Ju (郭巨). Incised pictures cover three inner walls, showing audiences, processions, hunts and acrobatic shows.
Getting oriented
Eastern Changqing holds the Changqing University Town (长清大学城), a cluster of colleges about 6 kilometres from the district centre and 20 kilometres from central Jinan. Building began in 2003 and colleges moved in from 2005; campuses in the district include Shandong Normal University (山东师范大学) and Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (山东中医药大学). Jinan Metro Line 1 runs through the district with stations at the university town and the Chuangxingu (创新谷) area, and National Highway 220 crosses it.
