The Shanxi side of Hukou
The waterfall lies in Hukou Town (壶口镇), within the Shanxi section of the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall National Geopark (黄河壶口瀑布国家地质公园). Here the river gathers into a horseshoe-shaped group of falls as its channel narrows sharply. Shanxi’s Department of Natural Resources describes a contraction from roughly 300 metres to 30 metres and a drop of about 40 metres.
Rock and river
The surrounding gorge exposes alternating harder and softer beds of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and shale. Water volume rises with melting ice and snow in March and April, and the river freezes in winter. Sediment gives the water its muddy colour.

The Shanxi Hukou tourism area identifies Yellow River carp (黄河鲤鱼), decorative steamed breads (黄河花馍) and paopao fried cakes (泡泡油糕) among its local food traditions.
