Setting and landscape

The land rises from west to east, from 577 metres at Qianhe village (前河村) in Zhangzhuang (张庄镇) to 1,511 metres on Xiwa East Mountain (西凹东山) in Zhaigeta (寨圪塔乡); the county town stands at about 800 metres. The east of the county is enclosed by hills and streams and has forest cover above 60 percent, against about 20 percent for the county as a whole. The county seat is Tiantan (天坛镇).

History

The name means 'floating mountain'. According to legend, in the time of the sage-kings Yao and Shun, when floods covered the land, a mountain southeast of Linfen rose and fell with the water as if it were floating. The county was founded in 619, the second year of the Tang Wude (武德) era. During the war against Japan, Zhu De (朱德) and Deng Xiaoping (邓小平) stationed troops here, and a site where the Eighth Route Army lodged survives at Shanjiao village (山交村) in Zhaigeta, in the east of the county.

What to see

Heritage sites named by the county government include Laojun Cave (老君洞), the Qingwei Taoist temple (清微观) and the ruins of the Tang-dynasty Tiansheng Palace (天圣宫). Shanjiao village also has the Shanshui and Gongxiao 'small towns' (山水小镇, 供销小镇), and the Linfen city government lists the Zhaigeta wellness scenic area (寨圪塔康养景区) at national 3A level.

Crafts and local traditions

Fushan paper-cutting earned the county the title 'Home of Chinese Folk Paper-Cutting Art' from the national Ministry of Culture in 1993. Fushan puppetry is on the Shanxi provincial intangible cultural heritage list, and Fushan jiazigu (架子鼓) drumming once won a gold award at a national drum-art competition.

Getting oriented

The Wari Railway (瓦日铁路) has a Fushan station, and the Fulin Expressway (浮临高速) and National Highway 241 pass through the county. The Linfen city government groups Fushan with Yicheng (翼城), Gu (古县) and Anze (安泽) in its Taiyue belt.
