Shahukou and the western passage
Shahukou (杀虎口) was an important pass for the migration known as Zou Xikou (走西口), or travelling through the western pass. In the Qing period, a customs office regulated the caravans passing through. The trading house Dashengkui (大盛魁) originated here. Historic remains include the Ming horse-market entrance, the old Xikou route and Tongshun Bridge (通顺桥); Youyu County Museum (右玉县博物馆) explains this border-trading culture.
Sheep, seabuckthorn and grains
Local products include mutton, wild seabuckthorn (野沙棘), oats, buckwheat and millet. Other named landscapes include the Youyu volcanic-neck group (右玉火山颈群) and the Cangtou River (苍头河) basin. Religious sites include Baoning Temple (宝宁寺) and Xianming Temple (显明寺).
