Shanyin County 山阴县

Shanyin County (山阴县) contains the Guangwu Great Wall (广武长城), a frontier landscape east of which lies Yanmen Pass (雁门关). Its surviving wall combines Ming and Northern Qi sections, while Huabeiyan Temple (化悲岩寺) represents another strand of the county’s older architecture.

The Guangwu wall

Guangwu’s wall extends for about 35.5 kilometres within Shanyin, including roughly 29.5 kilometres of Ming work and six kilometres from the Northern Qi. The Ming section retains brick-faced walls and sixteen watchtowers. The Moon Gate (月亮门), a recognisable landmark, has been rebuilt. The Guangwu section received national cultural relic protection in 2019.

A hillside temple

Huabeiyan Temple is also called Biyan Chan Temple (碧岩禅寺) and Yangtuo Temple (羊驮寺). It stands three kilometres southwest of Xinlizhuang Village (辛立庄村), 35 kilometres from the county town. Founded in the Northern Wei and rebuilt several times, the temple occupies a mountainside, with interconnected stone caves inside the complex.
