The Yan family estate

Construction of the estate began in 1913. Its courtyards combine palace-like buildings, northern Chinese houses, cave structures with verandas, and Chinese-Western architectural forms. Hebian Folk Museum likens the overall arrangement to a phoenix with spread wings: the western garden forms the head and the eastern garden the body. The principal axes run east–west, with the east treated as the place of honour.

A museum of local traditions

Hebian Folk Museum (河边民俗博物馆) opened in 1989, using the former residence. Displays include Yan family historical material, embroidery, paper-cutting and weaving. Stone, wood and brick carving are prominent features of the estate itself.
