Xinzhou’s old city
Xinzhou Ancient City (忻州古城) traces its foundation to 215 CE. It developed as a political and cultural centre and a trading town for northern Shanxi. A protection and renewal project began in 2017. Its landmarks include Xiurong Academy (秀容书院), Taishan Temple (泰山庙), the Temple of the God of Wealth (财神庙) and Guandi Temple (关帝庙).
Crafts and food in the lanes
The old city’s streets contain shops devoted to woodcarving, pyrography on gourds and paper-cutting. Local foods include hongmian yuyu (红面鱼鱼), yiwo su (一窝酥) and youmian wowo (莜面窝窝). These crafts and foods share the streets with the temples and academy.
