Setting and landscape

Heilongtan lies five kilometres northwest of the county seat. Construction began in 1970; the water surface extends across 23.6 square kilometres and contains eighty-five islands. The reservoir supplies water to the county town and much of the surrounding countryside, while also supporting irrigation.

What to see

Kuixing Pavilion (奎星阁), in the county town, is an octagonal, four-tiered building standing 29 metres high. First built in 1736, it was destroyed by fire in 1861 and rebuilt in 1863. Niujiaozhai Grottoes (牛角寨石窟), also called Renshou Giant Buddha (仁寿大佛), lie on Yingtou Mountain (鹰头山), 35 kilometres north of the county seat. The complex contains 101 niches with 1,519 sculptures.
