Salt and the district name

Salt production reaches back to Eastern Han well-drilling and brine-boiling. The settlement was formerly called Gongjing (公井); the district government links its later spelling (贡井) to salt supplied as imperial tribute during the Ming Jiajing reign. The present district name was adopted in January 1953.

What to see

Historic buildings include Nanhua Palace (南华宫), Guizhou Temple (贵州庙) and the Chen Ancestral Hall (陈家祠堂). Zhang Boqing’s Mansion (张伯卿公馆) combines Chinese and Western architectural elements. Other district sights include Dongyuan Salt Well (东源井), Aiye Ancient Town (艾叶古镇) and Pingqiao Waterfall (平桥瀑布), a waterfall within the urban area.
