History
Flooding destroyed Bengang’s Tianhou Temple (天后宮), and displaced residents carried some of its religious objects to Xingang. Fengtian Temple was built in the early nineteenth century to house the rescued objects. It became the destination of the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage (大甲媽祖遶境) in 1988.
What to see
Fengtian Temple faces south, with three halls arranged along its central axis. These include the street-facing Sanchuan Hall (三川殿), the main hall for Mazu, and a rear hall for Guanyin. The Sanchuan Hall has Cochin ceramic decoration on its swallowtail roof and carved stone pillars. Huye (虎爺), a tiger-form protective deity, has an altar in a side hall.
Getting oriented
The temple stands in downtown Xingang on County Highway 164, providing a clear starting point for understanding the town’s religious life.
