Railway lunches
After the Alishan Forest Railway (阿里山森林鐵路) was completed in 1912, Fenqihu became a maintenance stop. Trains carrying timber and workers paused here around midday, giving crews and passengers time to eat and helping establish the settlement’s railway lunchbox culture. The railway originally served timber transport between the mountains and Chiayi City (嘉義市).
Old street and wooden clogs
Fenqihu Old Street (奮起湖老街) extends for about 500 metres, with shops in winding lanes that rise and fall with the hillside. Products include wasabi, aiyu seeds and tree tomatoes. The Wooden Clog Museum (木屐館), beside Fenqihu Hotel (奮起湖飯店), displays different kinds of clogs. Fenqihu was once a centre for making wooden clogs; its cinder-surfaced streets made this footwear comfortable to wear.
