What to see

Red-brick town houses built mainly around 1920–1930 have decorated Baroque-style façades and sandstone arcades. Traditional Minnan courtyard houses and Japanese architecture also survive along the streets. The wooden Cishan station, with Victorian and Gothic elements, has become the Sugar Railway Story Museum (糖鐵故事館). A Belgian-built steam locomotive numbered 353 stands beside its platform.

Temples and local food

Cishan Tianhou Temple (旗山天后宮), a municipal historic site dating from the Jiaqing reign, retains a traditional Minnan temple exterior. The 1934 Butokuden (武德殿) recalls Japanese-period kendo and judo practice. Banana egg rolls, cakes and frozen desserts on the old street continue the district’s connection with its agricultural trade.
