Sinsing District 新興區

Sinsing District (新興區), formerly called Dagangpu (大港埔), developed around Kaohsiung Railway Station (高雄火車站). Its streets retain traces of the city’s postwar growth, including an adapted guesthouse and the Nanhua Shopping Area (南華商圈) beside Formosa Boulevard station (美麗島站).

An adapted house

Hok House (鶴宮寓) occupies a building constructed in 1958 as an architect’s three-storey home. A fourth floor was added in the 1960s when it became Hegong Hotel (鶴宮大旅社). Its later conversion into accommodation and a café retained the entrance doors, terrazzo stairs and original interior layout.

Nanhua’s painted stories

Nanhua was nicknamed Women’s Street (女人街) for its clothing, bags, hats and accessories. A mural beside Sinsing Post Office (新興郵局), painted by Crazy Jason (瘋狂傑森), depicts a girl, carp, a yellow duck, kapok flowers and a leopard cat. Carp refer to the district’s earlier abundance of these fish; kapok is Kaohsiung’s city flower.
