History
Local gentry funded the academy for scholars studying the classics and preparing for imperial examinations. It also provided elementary instruction for poorer families and maintained a granary against famine. Water and land rents from Caogong Canal (曹公圳) helped finance it. Under Japanese rule it served successively as a hospital branch, a sericulture station and official accommodation.
What to see
The academy’s buildings include a screen wall that reflects light indoors, a main gate, a lecture hall, offices and student lodging. Remains of its character-respecting pavilion and charitable granary survive. Sculpture groups recreate classroom teaching, a magistrate’s visit, military-examination practice and the town’s former cattle market, connecting the architecture with Qing-era daily life.
