From oysters to fishing
The Japanese authorities requisitioned the area for military use during the Second World War. Coastal erosion also contributed to the disappearance of oyster racks. By the 1980s, grey mullet was a valuable catch, earning the nickname Wujin, linked to the wealth it brought local fishermen.
A working fish market
Kezailiao’s market combines auctions, retail stalls and on-site preparation of seafood. Catches include butterfish, small shrimp, hairtail and squid. Designated spaces separate weighing from processing, and fish are handled above ground level. The Ziguan Fisheries Association (梓官區漁會) developed the direct-sales market from the older trading space, with fishmongers and auction staff wearing hats and rain boots.
