Setting and landscape
The island group lies about 133 kilometers northeast of the rest of Kinmen County, with the Taiwan Strait separating it from the main county settlements.
The lighthouse
Wuqiu Lighthouse (烏坵嶼燈塔) stands on the high point of Daqiu. Built in 1874 as a navigation aid between Fuzhou (福州) and Xiamen (廈門), it has a cylindrical stone tower with a lantern and gallery. The lighthouse lost its upper structure during the Second World War; repairs in 1947 left a lower black tower, and its light became inactive in 1951.
An offshore community
Wuqiu was formerly connected administratively with Putian (莆田). It was provisionally reassigned to Kinmen County in June 1954..
