Setting and landscape
The terrain is steep throughout; the township seat stands at 518 metres, and days and nights differ sharply in temperature. The township borders Alishan Township (阿里山鄉) in Chiayi County to the south-west and Wanrong Township (萬榮鄉) in Hualien County to the east. Provincial Highways 18 and 21 meet at Tataka (塔塔加), where the Yushan National Park visitor centre stands at 2,610 metres.
History and people
Under Japanese rule the area was indigenous territory administered directly by Niitaka District (新高郡) of Taichung Prefecture. After 1945 it became a mountain township, first called Luona (羅娜鄉) and later renamed Xinyi; in 2014 an indigenous campaign group asked the government to restore the Luona name. The Bunun (布農族) are the main indigenous people, followed by the Tsou (鄒族), and Bunun has been designated the township's local common language. In July 2022 Wangmei village was split to create Kalibuan (卡里布安), a Bunun word for "moon".
What to see
Taiwan's Tourism Administration suggests travelling along Highway 21 and the Chenyoulan River (陳有蘭溪) to villages such as Luona (羅娜) and Jiumei (久美). It also recommends crossing the Shuanglong rainbow suspension bridge (雙龍七彩吊橋) above a gorge and waterfall, and viewing the collapsed rock walls of Fuzi Cliff (父子斷崖) on the way to the start of the Batongguan Historic Trail (八通關古道), followed by a soak at the Dongpu hot springs (東埔溫泉) after hiking. The Tataka visitor centre has exhibits on Yushan's mid- and high-altitude ecology, geology, Bunun and Tsou culture and the history of the mountain.
Food and local products
The Tourism Administration calls Xinyi Taiwan's largest producer of green plums. In winter the orchards around Fengguidou (風櫃斗) and Wusonglun (烏松崙) are covered in white blossom, and plum wine, dried plums and plum dishes are the township's local products; the Meizi Dream Factory (梅子夢工廠) offers plum-wine and plum-vinegar making.
