An office and a residence
Construction began in 1851 and continued through three generations of local rulers. The complex has four successive main courtyards and ten side courts, with forty-seven buildings. The first three principal halls served official business and legal cases, while the main residential hall housed the tusi family. Gardens, study rooms, a theatre stage, kitchens, granaries, stables, an armoury and a prison formed part of its wider functions.
Timber, tiles and historical objects
Large beams and columns support broad tiled roofs. In the fourth courtyard, the main hall uses chestnut timber, the left wing Chinese toon and the right wing catalpa, a combination given symbolic meaning locally. Displays include late-Qing and Republican-period objects and contracts.
