A historic commercial street network

Fotang’s old streets had already developed substantially during the Ming and Qing periods. Three longitudinal streets and three cross streets form the historic commercial pattern, with Straight Street (直街) as a principal spine. Horse-head gables show the influence of Huizhou (徽州) architecture, while brick carving and woodwork add detail to the old buildings. Wanshan Floating Bridge (万善浮桥) was first built during the Qianlong reign.

Crafts and town traditions

The traditional Shiyueshi Festival (十月十) connects the town with its local cultural memory. Bamboo weaving, paper cutting and tinwork feature along the old street, beside foods such as pear-paste sweets (梨膏糖) and brown-sugar twists (红糖麻花). Fuhu Bridge (伏虎桥) combines a riverside crossing with designs inspired by local religious stories.
