Caves left by quarrying
Long periods of stone extraction left a network of large chambers, giving Shepan its association with a thousand caves. At Yanglan Chuanshandong (羊栏穿山洞), interconnected chambers and a large stone beam reflect the quarrying process. Sea views outside the openings place these worked spaces firmly within an island setting.
Stone craft and coastal livelihoods
The island’s cultural identity combines quarrying, stone carving, fishing and farming. Reclamation Square (围垦广场) has a sculptural scene of workers moving earth and placing stone to reclaim land. A2020 China Tourism News account also describes seafood, including green crab, as a local food speciality alongside the island’s grey-tiled older village houses.
