Wenling 温岭市

Wenling (温岭市) brings together coastal stone-built villages and chambers left by generations of quarrying. Shitang (石塘) and Changyu Dongtian (长屿硐天) provide two distinctive settings for exploring the importance of stone in local buildings, craft and landscape.

The worked chambers of Changyu

Changyu Dongtian lies in Xinhe Town (新河镇). Its groups of chambers were created through quarrying stone slabs. The complex includes Baxianyan (八仙岩), Shuangmendong (双门硐), Chongguo Temple (崇国寺) and Yeshan (野山). Natural rock within the chambers has also been carved into human, animal and other forms.

A fishing settlement built in stone

At Shitang, stone houses, walls and paths follow the hillside above a fishing port. Their shapes and levels respond to the terrain rather than a regular street grid. The Taizhou gazetteer records migration from southern Fujian (闽南) during the Ming dynasty, alongside distinctive fishing-community customs, women’s dress and everyday objects.
