Xianyu闲鱼 for Foreigners: China’s Secondhand Market, Bargains and Insider Slang
Xianyu (闲鱼) is where people in China sell what they no longer need—and where you can find far more than used phones and old clothes. Unopened gifts, discontinued camera parts, collectible toys, furniture, discount vouchers and people offering practical skills all appear here. Think of a secondhand marketplace with the variety of a classified-ad site, not a conventional online shop.
You may hear it jokingly called “China’s dark web.” The nickname is about the unexpected listings, niche communities and occasional shady offers. Xianyu is an ordinary Alibaba-owned platform, not an anonymous dark-web service. Its more useful local nickname is 海鲜市场—the “seafood market,” a joke on 闲鱼 sounding like 咸鱼, or salted fish.
For a visitor, it is best for a specific bargain or hard-to-find item, not an urgent purchase before a flight. For a longer stay, it becomes much more useful. The part foreigners need to check first is whether their account can complete identity checks and pay—not whether an interesting listing exists.

What can you buy on Xianyu? More than you expect
Some sellers are individuals clearing a cupboard. Others are collectors, resellers, repair shops or small businesses. “On Xianyu” does not mean “secondhand.” A sealed prize from an office raffle, a shop’s clearance stock and a used camera can all appear in the same search.
Useful finds—and the less obvious ones
| What you can look for | Chinese search terms | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened gifts and office-raffle prizes | 全新未拆封、年会奖品、礼品 | Seal, exact model, purchase proof and warranty eligibility. A convincing story is not proof of authenticity. |
| Discontinued camera accessories | 相机配件、日期后背、镜头盖 | Whether the listing is an accessory, not the camera shown in the photo; exact compatibility matters. |
| A missing part rather than a whole appliance | 配件、遥控器、零件 + model | A replacement remote, lid or sensor may solve the problem. Compare the model number, not just appearance. |
| Rare books, out-of-print editions and old magazines | 绝版书、旧杂志、老书 | Edition, missing pages, condition and whether shipping is included. |
| Collectible figures, doll accessories and fan merchandise | 潮玩、BJD、娃衣、周边 | Authenticity, included parts and box damage; a small accessory can be pictured beside an expensive figure. |
| Cosplay costumes, handmade props and press-on nails | cos服、道具、穿戴甲 | Size, whether it is a sale or rental, and whether the photos show the actual item. |
| Display furniture and moving-sale items | 展厅样品、搬家出、自提 | Dimensions, lifting help and transport. A cheap cabinet is not a bargain if moving it costs more than buying new. |
| Hobby equipment for a short stay | 二手吉他、露营装备、钓具 | Complete kit, wear and pickup timing. Do not assume you can resell it before leaving. |
| Coffee, dining and cinema-related vouchers | 咖啡券、餐饮券、电影票 | Transferability, branch, expiry, restrictions and whether you receive a voucher or someone places an order for you. |
| Pet walking and other practical skills | 遛狗、技能、语言陪练 | Service area, experience, scope, scheduling and any credentials needed for the work. |
| Commercial equipment | 售酒机、设备、五金 | Condition, installation and freight. The range extends well beyond things a tourist would buy. |
| Plants and gardening supplies | 花卉、花架、园艺 | Local collection, condition and delivery. Do not assume plants can travel home in your luggage. |
The surprise is often not a bizarre product. It is finding exactly the obscure part, sold-out collectible or small local service that a mainstream shop does not offer. The public website even has categories for equipment and agricultural supplies.
Why are new goods sometimes cheaper?
Common reasons include an unwanted gift, surplus stock, an opened box, a discontinued model or a seller who values a quick sale. Some sellers also offer 代下—placing an order on your behalf, rather than handing over a physical product or transferable voucher.
That distinction matters. A coffee listing may cover one drink ordered through the seller’s account, not a voucher you can freely use anywhere. A very low displayed price may be a service fee, an accessory price or a starting price for one variant.
For dining deals with clearer merchant-side redemption, start with our Meituan guide. Use Xianyu when you understand what the seller is actually supplying.
Step 1: install the right app and check your account access
For mainland China, use 闲鱼 / Xianyu, also known in English as Idle Fish. Its website is goofish.com.
Official download entries:
- Xianyu on the iPhone App Store—app ID 510909506, developer Zhejiang Alibaba Xianyu Network Technology Co., Ltd.
- Xianyu on Google Play—package com.taobao.idlefish, listed under Taobao.
Do not confuse it with the separate “Goofish – Selling & Buying” app. That app serves a different market; it is not simply an English switch for the mainland Xianyu catalogue. The mainland website using the name goofish.com adds to the confusion.
Use your own app-store account. If Xianyu is unavailable in your store region, try its official website or check the official download options rather than borrowing someone’s Apple ID or installing a random APK.
Register or sign in
- Open Log in / Register / 登录 / 注册, usually from the initial prompt or Me / 我的.
- Choose SMS login / 短信登录, or a linked-account option offered on your screen. If using an existing Taobao or Alipay route, authorize only your own account.
- Select the country code for your phone number, then enter the number in the format requested.
- Request the SMS code, enter it and complete any security check.
- Follow the account’s identity-verification or Alipay-linking prompt if it appears.
The official overseas-user terms recognize overseas phone registration, but access is region-dependent. The May 2026 terms explicitly say services are not offered to some unopened markets, including the United States. A country code appearing in a menu is not a guarantee of registration or full trading access.
If SMS fails, check the country code, roaming and ability to receive service messages. A data-only travel eSIM gives you internet, not necessarily a phone number or SMS; our SIM vs eSIM guide explains the difference. Respect the retry interval shown by the app.

Real-name verification and Alipay
Prepare Alipay before trying to buy. Follow its overseas identity-verification flow with your own passport and any additional material requested. Link the account when Xianyu asks.
Alipay verification and Xianyu access are separate checks. If Xianyu requires a document type you cannot provide, use its official help rather than inventing a Chinese ID number or buying a “verified account.”
Can you use Xianyu in English?
The current mainland iPhone listing includes English among its supported languages. Check the language options in your installed version, and use a per-app language setting if your phone offers one. Do not assume that every Android version or web page has the same options.
Seller descriptions, image text and chats still need Chinese translation. Screenshot translation is particularly useful for condition notes and shipping terms. Keep product model numbers unchanged when translating, and use the Chinese search terms below instead of relying on English alone.
Step 2: search like a local, then narrow the results
Start with the item or model + the condition or location you need. Broad searches such as “camera” produce accessories, broken equipment, rentals and whole cameras together.
Useful examples:
| What you want | Search to try |
|---|---|
| A used guitar in Shanghai | 上海 二手吉他 |
| A sealed, unused item | Product name + 全新未拆封 |
| A specific replacement part | Exact model + 配件 |
| Local pickup in Beijing | 北京 + item + 自提 |
| A moving-sale desk | City + 书桌 搬家 |
| A discontinued book | Book title + 绝版 |
Open Search / 搜索, type the keywords and inspect the filters. The public website shows Personal idle items / 个人闲置, Brand new / 全新, Shipping included / 包邮, Region / 区域 and other category-dependent choices. The app may group them differently.

Sort by Newly listed / 新发布 or Recently reduced / 新降价 when useful. If you sort by price, read the description before celebrating a bargain: the cheapest entry might be a lens cap, a deposit or a broken unit.
For pickup, use the city or Region / 区域 filter and confirm the actual neighbourhood with the seller. “Same city” can still mean a long journey across town.
Step 3: read the listing—not just the headline price
Open the item and check five things: what is included, its condition, the seller, delivery and the total price.
For electronics, ask about repairs, faults, battery condition, locks and included accessories. For a camera accessory, check the precise model it fits. For clothes, request measurements rather than assuming a Chinese size corresponds to the size you wear at home.

99新 or 95新 is not an inspection grade. It is the seller’s rough description of condition. Photos of the actual item, a clear explanation of faults and a demonstration of the function you need are more useful.
Open the seller’s profile and read recent transaction feedback. A person selling a few unrelated household items looks different from a reseller listing dozens of identical phones. Neither is automatically good or bad. Credit labels and a long account history are useful signals, not a warranty.
For eligible items, 验货宝 offers an inspection service with its own scope and fees. Read what it checks; do not assume it guarantees every aspect of a device, accessory or collectible.
Four descriptions that deserve a closer look
- 全新未拆封—new and sealed: ask about the purchase source, seal and warranty, especially for expensive brands.
- 自用—personally used: useful context, but anyone can write it.
- 原单 / 尾单—original-order or surplus-stock claims: not proof that a branded item is genuine.
- 配件机 / 尸体机—parts or dead device: intended for repair or parts, not a working bargain phone.

Step 4: ask a few precise questions—and negotiate normally
Tap I want it / 我想要 to enter the seller conversation when your account supports it. This is an enquiry, not a completed purchase.
Keep messages short. A seller is more likely to answer a clear question about one item than a long paragraph explaining your whole trip.
| Message to copy | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 请问还在吗? | Is it still available? |
| 是照片里的实物吗? | Is the actual item the one in these photos? |
| 有什么瑕疵或维修记录? | Are there any defects or previous repairs? |
| 可以发一下实物细节照片吗? | Could you send close-up photos of the actual item? |
| 能正常使用吗?包含哪些配件? | Does it work normally, and which accessories are included? |
| 可以小刀吗? | Is a small discount possible? |
| 这个价格包含运费吗? | Does this price include shipping? |
| 今天能发货吗?大概几天到上海? | Can you ship today? Roughly how many days to Shanghai? |
| 可以同城自提吗?在哪里取? | Can I pick it up locally? Where? |
| 我们走闲鱼平台交易。 | Let’s complete the transaction through Xianyu. |
小刀 means a small price reduction. If the seller says 不刀 or 不议价, the price is fixed. Offer once, reasonably, and move on if it does not work. A lower price that includes shipping may be more useful than a tiny reduction followed by expensive postage.
Ask the seller to put agreed details and the final price into the listing or order. An agreement hidden in an external chat is harder to use in a platform dispute.
Step 5: buy through the order and confirm the payment result
After agreeing on the item and price, use the listing or chat’s Buy now / 立即购买 / 立即买下 entry. The wording and position can vary.
- Review the item, agreed price and shipping charge. If the seller is adjusting the price, wait for the order to show the correct total before paying.
- Add your delivery address: recipient, reachable number and the full Chinese address.
- Choose a payment method actually accepted by the checkout, then complete its verification.
- Return to Xianyu and check that the order shows Paid / 已付款 or Awaiting shipment / 待发货.
A foreign card working at a shop through Alipay does not guarantee it can pay an ordinary Xianyu personal-seller order. Check whether the card is selectable for that specific checkout. If it is unavailable, do not replace the order with a private transfer or a payment link sent by the seller.

Sending a parcel to your hotel
Ask reception first whether it accepts shopping parcels, not just food delivery. Use the hotel’s full Chinese address and agree on the recipient name and contact number. Get permission before using the hotel’s number.
Leave time for dispatch and delivery. “Can ship today” is not “will arrive today.” Avoid ordering to a hotel you will leave before the parcel arrives. For an urgent charger or everyday item, a local shop or Meituan delivery is usually simpler.
Collecting in person
Arrange a clear public meeting point and inspect the item before completing the agreed transaction. For electronics, allow time to test them and check that account locks have been removed. Do not travel to an unfamiliar private location because the seller promises an extraordinary discount.
Keep the agreement in Xianyu and use its supported transaction route where available. Cash or a private wallet transfer does not carry the same platform order protection.
Step 6: receive, inspect and only then confirm
Open Me / 我的 → Bought items / 我买到的, or the equivalent order section. Track the shipment and read the order’s status and countdown.
When the parcel arrives, document the packaging and contents, then compare the item with the listing and the seller’s promises. Test the important functions before tapping Confirm receipt / 确认收货. Confirming receipt advances the transaction toward settlement to the seller.
Do this promptly. Under the current general rules, a tracked parcel can reach automatic transaction success three days after recorded delivery if you neither confirm nor request a refund. Other delivery types have different deadlines. Use your order’s live countdown, not a remembered number from an old tutorial.
If something is wrong
Do not confirm receipt just because the seller asks. Open the order’s Refund / 退款 / 申请退款 or after-sales entry, select the actual reason and attach clear evidence: photos, video, the original description and the relevant in-app messages.
If a return is required, follow the agreed or platform-directed process and keep the tracking record. If the seller rejects the request, use Ask Xianyu to intervene / 申请闲鱼介入 within the displayed deadline.

Personal secondhand listings do not automatically come with seven-day no-reason returns. Some business sellers or marked listings offer that service. “I changed my mind” is different from an item being faulty or materially unlike its description. A seller writing “no returns” does not turn a misdescribed item into an acceptable delivery.
Xianyu slang: the words that change what you are buying
You do not need to memorize every joke. Learn the terms that affect condition, price, delivery and whether the seller is actually selling.
Buying and bargaining
| Chinese term | What it means in context |
|---|---|
| 海鲜市场 / 小黄鱼 | Nicknames for Xianyu, not a seafood category. |
| 出 / 收 | 出 means “selling”; 收 means “looking to buy.” A wanted listing is not stock you can purchase. |
| 挂 / 挂闲鱼 | List an item on Xianyu. |
| 拍 / 拍下 | Place the order. It does not mean “take a photo” in this context. |
| 秒拍 / 爽快 | Order promptly, with little back-and-forth. Do not let the wording rush your checks. |
| 小刀 / 可刀 | A small reduction / negotiable price. |
| 不刀 / 不议价 | No bargaining. |
| 大刀 / 屠龙刀 | A large or absurdly low counteroffer; 屠龙刀 literally means “dragon-slaying sword.” |
| 改价 | The seller changes the listing or order price. Check the updated total before paying. |
| 捡漏 | Find a bargain others have overlooked. It is not a quality guarantee. |
| 蹲 | Wait or keep watching for the right item or price. |
| 暂挂不出 / 只晒不卖 | Listed for display or not selling for now. Do not assume it is available. |
| 传家宝 | A sarcastic description of a seller pricing an ordinary item like a family heirloom. |
| 鸽子 / 跑单 | Someone backs out, disappears or fails to follow through. |
Condition, delivery and services
| Chinese term | What it means in context |
|---|---|
| 全新未拆封 | Claimed brand-new, unopened. Verify it when authenticity matters. |
| 拆封未用 | Opened but claimed unused. Not the same as factory sealed. |
| 99新 / 95新 | Subjective “nearly new” condition shorthand, not a standardized score. |
| 瑕疵 | Defect, flaw or wear. Ask for close-up photos. |
| 无拆无修 | Claimed never opened or repaired. Ask about evidence for expensive electronics. |
| 配件机 / 尸体机 | A device sold for parts or a non-working device. |
| 包邮 / 到付 | Shipping included / shipping paid on delivery. Neither means free international shipping. |
| 自提 / 面交 / 同城 | Pickup / meet in person / same city. Agree on a precise location. |
| 代下 | The seller places an order on your behalf; you may not receive a transferable voucher. |
| 转赠 / 转让 | Gift or transfer to another person. Check whether the issuer permits it. |
| 原单 / 尾单 | Claims about original manufacturing orders or surplus stock—not authentication. |
| 走平台 | Keep the transaction inside Xianyu’s order system. |
One example pulls several of these together:
自用,95新,无拆无修,包邮,可小刀。
Personally used, described as nearly new, claimed never opened or repaired, shipping included, small offers welcome.
That tells you what the seller claims and how to negotiate. It does not replace checking the photos, model and function.

A few shortcuts are not worth taking
The useful Xianyu bargains are ordinary goods and clearly described services. Skip offers that depend on buying somebody else’s verified account, supplying your SMS code, giving remote access to your phone or paying a “verification deposit” through a seller’s link.
For vouchers, confirm that the offer is legitimately transferable and usable by you. Check the branch, dates and any first-time-user restriction. Keep live redemption codes private. For 代下, ask what is being ordered, where you collect it and what happens if the order fails; never hand over your own login or verification code.
A very cheap branded item with stock photos and a story about “factory surplus” is not necessarily a lucky find. A price that looks wrong is a reason to understand the listing, not a reason to pay faster.
If registration or trading is blocked, use Help / 客服 in the app. The official store listing also gives taobao-fleamarket-client@list.alibaba-inc.com for feedback. Send the relevant error and a redacted screenshot, not passwords, payment codes or full identity-document images by email.
Is Xianyu worth using on a China trip?
For a short visit: browse for an interesting collectible or a specific local pickup, but do not build your travel plans around a voucher reseller or a parcel arriving at the last minute.
For a longer stay: Xianyu is genuinely useful for household items, hobbies, new-stock bargains and hard-to-find parts. Start with a low-value purchase you understand, learn the order flow, and keep the payment and agreement on-platform.
The local rule is simple: know what the listing is actually selling, ask the few questions that matter, and inspect before confirming receipt. That is how you get the benefit of the “seafood market” without treating every cheap listing as a bargain.
