Courtyards above the river junction

The monastery’s main hall faces the river confluence. Construction began in 1437 and finished in 1444. The Gelug complex has overlapping courtyards, golden roofs, a protector hall, a Maitreya hall and a mandala hall. Hundreds of statues of Buddhas and eminent monks occupy its great assembly hall.

Evidence of a Neolithic settlement

The Karuo archaeological site lies about twelve kilometres southeast of the city. Discovered in the late 1970s, it dates to the late Neolithic, around four to five thousand years ago. Excavations identified thirty-one house remains and recovered stone tools, bone objects and pottery fragments, together with animal bones and millet.
