History
A county was first set up here between 405 and 418 under the Eastern Jin as Shacun (沙村县); abolished under the Sui, it was restored in 621 under the Tang and renamed Sha County. A legend of a hornless dragon (虬) in the town reach gives that stretch of the river the name Qiujiang (虬江) and the town its nickname, Qiucheng (虬城). After the uprising of Deng Maoqi (邓茂七) was put down, the Ming carved Yong'an County out of Sha's southern districts in 1452. The Song Confucian scholar Luo Congyan (罗从彦, 1072–1135), a pupil of Yang Shi (杨时), and the Ming court bird-and-flower painter Bian Jingzhao (边景昭) were natives.
Food and local products
Shaxian snacks run to more than 240 varieties, and their preparation techniques entered the national intangible heritage list in 2021. The district calls good peanut sauce the guarantee of the snacks' flavour: peeled peanuts are slow-roasted over a low fire and ground again and again. Chilli sauce comes in two styles, one made with sesame oil and one with water, garlic, ginger, sugar and salt, both from freshly chopped local chillies.
Cured duck (板鸭) is made from paddy-raised mule ducks that are salted, sun-dried and smoked repeatedly over charcoal and tea-seed husks, then steamed with ginger and cooking wine and brushed with sesame oil. Other products include hand-pulled dried noodles (面干), Xiamao winter wine (夏茂冬酒) brewed from glutinous rice and nicknamed "Shaxian cola", Hongbian tea (红边茶), whose processing became provincial intangible heritage in 2022, and Zhenghu persimmons (郑湖水柿), a geographical indication product since 2013.
Traditions and sights
Shaxian shoulder opera (沙县肩膀戏), dating from the late Qing, puts a child of about eight on an adult's shoulders: the child sings and gestures while the adult moves about the stage. It became provincial intangible heritage in 2005. Buddhist temples on Taojin Mountain (淘金山) and at Dongtian Rock (洞天岩) have worshipped the Dingguang Buddha (定光佛) since the Tang and Song. The Luoyan Taibao Temple (罗岩太保庙) at Huacun (华村) in Nanyang Township (南阳乡), built by 1213 at the latest, honours a snake deity.
Getting oriented
The Xiangtang–Putian (向莆), Yingtan–Xiamen (鹰厦) and Nanping–Sanming–Longyan (南三龙) railways run through the district, and Sanming North railway station (三明北站) stands here. Sanming Shaxian Airport opened to flights in 2016.
