History
The district was created in 1953 and takes its name from Anning Fort (安宁堡), a Ming-dynasty military fort built to station troops and defend the frontier. The name was chosen to wish for a calm border free of raids. The district government quotes the old description of the area as the "northwest key of Jincheng" (金城西北锁钥).
What to see
The district government lists Renshou Mountain (仁寿山), Lanzhou Wildlife Park (兰州野生动物园), Lanzhou Botanical Garden (兰州植物园), Yintan Wetland (银滩湿地), Tianfu Shagong (天斧砂宫), the library that houses the Wensu Pavilion copy of the Siku Quanshu (文溯阁《四库全书》藏书馆) and the Lanzhou Guoxue Hall (兰州国学馆) among its natural and cultural sights. The Renshou Mountain area is the centre of its culture and tourism, and Wuyue Plaza (吾悦广场) and Zhonghai Huanyu City (中海环宇城) are its main shopping centres.
Food and local products
Anning is the home of the Baifeng peach (白凤桃), which the district counts among China's four great honey peaches, and it has long been called the "ten-li peach country" (十里桃乡).
Getting oriented
The district has eight institutions of higher education, among them Lanzhou Jiaotong University (兰州交通大学), Northwest Normal University (西北师范大学) and Gansu Agricultural University (甘肃农业大学), together with provincial research bodies such as the Gansu Academy of Social Sciences (省社科院) and the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (省农科院). It includes two towns, Zhonghe (忠和镇) and Jiuhe (九合镇).
