Setting and landscape
The Guanlan River (观澜河) rises on Danaoke Mountain (大脑壳山) in Minzhi (民治), flows north past Qinghu (清湖) and Guanlan (观澜) into Dongguan, where it becomes the Shima River (石马河), and joins the Dongjiang (东江); the whole river is 88 kilometres long. Yangtai Mountain (羊台山) stands where Longhua's Dalang (大浪) subdistrict meets Bao'an (宝安) and Nanshan (南山) districts; at 581.7 metres it is the highest point in western Shenzhen, and its green slopes were chosen as one of the Eight Views of Shenzhen in 2004.
History
The name comes from Longhua market (龙华墟), set up by early settlers who built the Longsheng Hall (龙胜堂) and named the market for the prosperity they hoped it would bring. The area was split from Bao'an District as the Longhua New Area on 30 December 2011; the State Council approved the district in October 2016 and it opened in January 2017. Baishilong (白石龙) is the site of the rescue of Chinese cultural figures (中国文化名人大营救旧址).
What to see
The Guanlan printmaking village (观澜版画村) grew out of Dashuitian (大水田), a Hakka village of row houses, ancestral halls, ponds and watchtowers. In 2006 the China Artists Association, the Shenzhen arts federation and the district agreed to build the China Guanlan Original Printmaking Base here, in the home area of the woodcut pioneer Chen Yanqiao (陈烟桥), who was born in Guanlan's Niuhu (牛湖) village and studied printmaking under Lu Xun. The restored village keeps its old houses, with print workshops in the east and an international artists' village in the west.
Guihutang old walled village (贵湖塘老围) in Guanlan belongs to the Hakka Chen family: 50 late-Qing houses with 136 rooms, an ancestral hall, a study, a gate and a watchtower. It lies between the old Guanlan market and the Mission Hills golf courses (观澜湖高尔夫球场), designed by Jack Nicklaus and described by the district as China's only 72-hole course; the World Cup of golf was held there in 1995.
Getting oriented
Shenzhen North Station is served by the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong high-speed railway and the Xiamen–Shenzhen and Shenzhen–Maoming lines, and metro lines 4, 5 and 6 run through the district. Minzhi, the part closest to Futian and Luohu, has grown into a largely residential area.
