Setting and landscape
Qingxiu District lies south of the Tropic of Cancer in south-eastern Nanning, facing Jiangnan (江南) and Liangqing (良庆) districts across the river. The west is the basin plain of the city proper and the east is low hills. The climate is subtropical monsoon with little frost and no snow; average annual temperature is 21.7°C, and about 80% of the rain falls between April and September.
History
The urban part of today's district was Nanning's Second District in March 1953. Districts were abolished in 1955 and restored in July 1958 as Jiangning District (江宁区), which became Xincheng District (新城区) in March 1979. In March 2005 Xincheng was renamed Qingxiu. The Junshan temple fair (军山庙会) in Changtang (长塘), a Zhuang village festival of more than 300 years, is on Guangxi's intangible-heritage list.
What to see
Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area takes in 18 hills of various sizes, among them Qingshan Ridge (青山岭) and Fenghuang Ridge (凤凰岭), covering 791 hectares by the Yong River. It grew out of a forestry farm; the city began developing it for tourism in 1985, and it was rated a national 5A scenic area on 28 November 2014. The scenic area counts 1,116 species of tropical and subtropical plants, including 61 rare or endangered ones such as cycads and tree ferns.
Inside the scenic area, next to the river, the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities (广西民族博物馆) has a main building shaped after a bronze drum and a park of traditional Guangxi houses. Its six permanent displays include ones on Guangxi ethnic cultures, bronze drums and Zhuang culture, and its collection of more than 30,000 items is mainly bronzes, bamboo and wood objects, silver ornaments and textiles. Other rated sights in the district include the Guangxi Science and Technology Museum, Fengling Children's Park (凤岭儿童公园), Minge Lake (民歌湖) and Golden Camellia Park (金花茶公园).
Getting oriented
Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center, the permanent venue of the China–ASEAN Expo, is in the district. Nanning East railway station is on the Hunan–Guangxi line within the district, and Nanning Metro lines 1 and 3 have stations at the East Railway Station, the Convention Center and Qingxiu Mountain.
