History
The area was developed as the Jinyang New Area (金阳新区) from early 2000, taking in parts of Yeya (野鸭乡), Jinhua (金华镇) and Zhuchang (朱昌镇) from Wudang District (乌当区) and part of Maijia (麦架乡) from Baiyun District (白云区). In November 2012 the State Council approved Guanshanhu District on the basis of the new area, adding Baihuahu township (百花湖乡) from Qingzhen (清镇市). Guiyang's municipal administrative centre, the Guiyang Olympic Sports Centre (贵阳奥体中心), the international convention and exhibition centre and Guiyang North Railway Station (贵阳北站) are all here, and the China International Big Data Industry Expo (中国国际大数据产业博览会) is held in the district every year.
Setting and landscape
The district sits on the second step of the Guizhou plateau, within the hill-and-basin country of central Guizhou. Hills surround it on the east, south and west; the ground is fairly gentle, falling from the south-west to the north-east, and mostly lies at 1,250 to 1,300 metres. Karst landforms are widespread, and Jiangjun Mountain (将军山) and Jiulong Mountain (九龙山) are the main ranges. The average temperature is 15°C and yearly rainfall about 1,200 millimetres.
Guizhou Guiyang Baihua Lake National Wetland Park (贵州贵阳百花湖国家湿地公园), about 10 kilometres from the Jinyang urban area, was approved as a pilot national wetland park in December 2016. It protects an important water source for Guiyang, and 117 bird species have been recorded there.
What to see
The Guizhou Provincial Museum (贵州省博物馆) is among the provincial institutions based in the district. The Guizhou Geological Museum (贵州省地质博物馆), at the junction of Yuntan South Road (云潭南路) and Xingzhu Road (兴筑路), about 800 metres from Xingzhu Road station on Metro Line 2, has four permanent exhibitions presenting Guizhou's fossils, karst and sedimentary rocks.
Green spaces include Guanshanhu Park (观山湖公园), an urban wetland park of more than 5,500 mu, the Guiyang Karst Park (贵阳喀斯特公园), the Baihua Lake scenic area (百花湖风景名胜区), Yueshan Lake Park (阅山湖公园), Panlong Cave (盘龙洞) and Jiulongshan Forest Park (九龙山森林公园). The Tianlai Jiuzhou (天籁九州) attraction has an underground canal that visitors can travel by boat, and the park reproduces Guizhou landmarks in miniature, among them the Jiaxiu Tower (甲秀楼), a wind-and-rain bridge and Huangguoshu (黄果树).
