History
The name Guzhou goes back to the Song. After the Guizhou governor Zhang Guangsi (张广泗) campaigned here in 1729, the Qing set up Guzhou subprefecture (古州厅) in 1730, built an earthen-walled town and made Guzhou one of Guizhou's four main military garrisons; from 1740 it was also the seat of a military circuit. In 1913 the subprefecture became Rongjiang County, named for the many old banyan trees (榕) in the town and for the meeting of the Duliu (都柳江), Zhaihao (寨蒿河) and Pingyong (平永河) rivers.
At the end of April 1930 the Red Seventh Army (红七军) took the town, which the county records as the first victory in Guizhou of an army led by the Communist Party and the first county town in the province it captured.
What to see
In the town, Guzhou Old Street (古州古街) grew as a trading quarter after the Yongzheng-era walls were built and earned the nickname "Little Nanjing"; its guild halls include the Lianghu Guild Hall (两湖会馆), known for painted clay sculpture. Dahekou Wharf (大河口码头), at the meeting of the three rivers, was Qing Guzhou's main river port and was once called the Red Army ferry. The Red Seventh Army History Exhibition Hall (红七军历史陈列馆) occupies the site of a Qing military office.
Sanbao Dong village (三宝侗寨), which the county calls the first Dong village under heaven, has groves of old banyans and a drum tower. The Ming-to-Qing buildings of Dali village (大利村) are a national key protected site. The county also names its Miao King Temple and Miao King Tomb (苗王庙, 苗王墓) and 29 villages on the national traditional-village list. Matches of the village football league, the "Cunchao" (村超), are played at the Guizhou Cunchao stadium (贵州村超球场), which the county calls its central landmark, with ethnic song and dance at half-time.
Culture, food and local products
Rongjiang has the Dong Grand Song (侗族大歌), on the world intangible-heritage list, among its 12 national intangible-heritage items, and the county is the reference point for standard Dong pronunciation. Local dishes include rolled rice noodles (卷粉), beef or goat bie soup (牛羊瘪汤), grilled fish and pickled fish. Xili tribute rice (锡利贡米), Rongjiang small fragrant chicken (榕江小香鸡), Rongjiang kudzu root and Tashi fragrant goat (塔石香羊) are national geographical-indication products, and Rongjiang watermelons are known across Guizhou.
