Setting and landscape

The city measures 39 kilometres from east to west and 45 kilometres from north to south, with a warm-temperate, semi-humid monsoon climate. In 2010 the city's Party committee proposed four tourist greenways based on its main landscapes: along the Great Wall in the north, through the forests of the west, across the Luan River wetlands in the centre, and along the Qinglong River (青龙河) in the east.

History

Under the Han the area was Lingzhi County (令支县) in Liaoxi Commandery (辽西郡). In 923 the Liao resettled captive households here from Anxi County (安喜县) in Dingzhou (定州) and the new county took the name Anxi. The Jin renamed it Qian'an County in 1167, and in October 1996 it became a county-level city.

What to see

The Baiyangyu Great Wall (白羊峪长城) in Dacuizhuang town (大崔庄镇) was first built in the early Ming and faced with brick, thickened and repaired in the Longqing and Wanli reigns. It keeps 21 watchtowers and 4,552 metres of well-preserved wall. About 1,500 metres of it, 10 metres high and 5 metres wide, stand on marble, which forms most of the base of the wall and its towers. The Baiyang River (白羊河) flows north to south through the pass all year.

Shanyekou (山叶口), in Dawuli town (大五里镇) in the west of the city, covers 14 square kilometres; it opened on 26 September 2011, is rated 4A and is also a provincial forest park. It is one of four areas of the 46.57-square-kilometre Qian'an National Geopark (迁安国家地质公园), with Lingshan (灵山), Hongyukou (红峪口) and Huangtai Lake (黄台湖); the geopark preserves ancient metamorphic rocks and many structural features.

Huangtai Lake, west of the urban area, was dug along an old course of the Luan; on its west shore are the Wulishan cliff Buddhas (五里山摩崖石佛像), some 1,500 years old. In Huangtai Mountain Park (黄台山公园) a statue of the Yellow Emperor faces the 54-metre Xuanyuan Pavilion (轩辕阁) on the hill.
