Setting and landscape
Fenglin lies in the Lesser Khingan Range (小兴安岭). The county government puts forest cover at about 90 percent, mostly broadleaf and mixed forest with Korean pine, spruce, fir and Xing'an larch, and counts more than 300 species of wild animals, 43 of them under first- or second-class national protection. Twenty rivers cross the county.
Summers are mild: the average year has fewer than 11 days above 30°C, the mean annual temperature is 0.6°C and the frost-free season lasts 118 days. About 73 percent of the rain falls from June to August. The county government describes azaleas beside basalt in spring and the mixed autumn colours it calls "five-flower mountains" (五花山).
