History and old streets
Victory Square (胜利广场) was planned in 1917, on a European model, as the traffic hub of the eastern city: a round centre where Eryijiu Road, Shengli Road, Wuyi Road and Qianjin Road now meet. The road to Anshan station was built in 1919 as Dazheng Road (大正通), and the square was first Dazheng Square. It was renamed Central Square in 1946, City Government Square in 1948 and Victory Square in 1953, changed back in 1980 and took the Victory name again in the new century. On its east side stands the office building of the coking and refractories institute (焦耐院), in a mixed Chinese and Western style, which the district government counts among Anshan's best-known landmarks.
The Dongbin Leisure and Culture Quarter (东宾特色休闲文化街区) covers Dongfeng Street, Yingbin Street and Shi'erdao Street. It was begun in 1919 as a fan-shaped grid of three streets by four, and the district government calls it the part of Anshan where early modern buildings best keep their historic look. It is a provincial historic and cultural protection block, with Western restaurants, cafés and the garden-style Dongshan Hotel (东山宾馆). Formerly the Taiding (台町) block, it was upgraded in 2023 and became the city's first provincial-level tourism and leisure block.
What to see
219 Park (二一九公园) lies in the east of central Anshan. It was laid out under Japanese rule as Asahiyama Park (朝日山公园) and in 1950 was renamed after 19 February 1948, the date of the liberation of Anshan. The park area of 112.5 hectares includes a zoo and the Dongshan amusement park; the shores of its five man-made lakes have the Yingbi Tower (映碧楼) and Huancui Pavilion (环翠阁), and the eastern hills have more than ten viewing pavilions and the 38-metre Liaomei Pagoda (了美塔).
The Jade Buddha Temple (玉佛寺), first called the Jade Buddha Garden (玉佛苑), opened on 3 September 1996 with hills on three sides and water on the fourth. Its 33-metre Jade Buddha Pavilion holds a statue carved from the 260.76-tonne "King of Jade" found in 1960 in Xiuyan (岫岩), with Shakyamuni on the front and Guanyin crossing the sea on the back; it was entered in Guinness World Records in 2002 as the largest jade Buddha. The temple became one of China's first national AAAA scenic areas in 2001.
Youth Lane (青年巷) is the core of the 1.4-kilometre Workers' Street (工人街) quarter: the middle section has themed murals on the city's industrial history, and the western section is a food street called "Anshan Flavours".
