Setting and landscape
The district lies on the gently rolling plain in the middle of Anshan, where the low Qianshan (千山) hills give way to the plain of the Liao (辽), Hun (浑) and Taizi (太子) rivers. The ground falls from southeast to northwest but is almost flat, averaging 25 metres above sea level, and the district sits on a water-rich section of the Yangliu River (杨柳河) alluvial fan, with its water supply drawn from groundwater near Nantaoguan (南陶官). The built-up area is roughly fan-shaped, bounded by the steelworks to the north and the Harbin–Dalian high-speed railway to the west.
Food, crafts and markets
The district government describes a mix of Korean song and dance, Manchu dress and Han festivals among its residents. Among the traditional skills it names are Lü family stone carving (吕氏石雕), dating from the Jin dynasty, Toudaomen roast chicken (头道门烧鸡), made for more than 200 years, Jingxiang cloisonné pictures (景祥景泰蓝工艺画) and Shizhi Chunfeng embroidery (十指春风传统刺绣).
Pet breeding took hold here in the late 1980s. The district government describes its pet markets, led by the Bajiazi pet market (八家子宠物市场), as China's largest trading hub for live animals, mainly pedigree dogs and cats.
Getting oriented
Anshan West station (鞍山西站) on the high-speed line is in Tiexi, and the Changchun–Dalian Railway, the Shenyang–Dalian Expressway (沈大高速公路) and the Harbin–Dalian high-speed railway (哈大高速客运铁路) all cross the district. Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (沈阳桃仙国际机场) is 89 kilometres to the north. Qianshan West Road (千山西路), Renmin Road (人民路) and Tonghai Avenue (通海大道) are among its main roads.
