Getting oriented

Xigang covers 26.6 square kilometres of land and 221.5 square kilometres of sea. To the north it faces Ganjingzi District (甘井子区) across the water. The district government describes Xigang as the starting point of Dalian as a city and names Dongguan Street (东关街) and Fengming Street (凤鸣街) among its century-old streets.

Many of the city's main public institutions are here, including the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University (大连医科大学附属第一医院), the Dalian Library (大连市图书馆) and the Dalian Planning Exhibition Centre (大连市规划展示中心). Both the Liaoning (辽宁舰), China's first aircraft carrier, and the Shandong (山东舰), its first domestically built carrier, came out of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (大连船舶重工), a company based in the district. The district has also been named a "famous city of quyi" (中国曲艺名城), after the traditional storytelling and ballad arts.

What to see

The Dalian Forest Zoo (大连森林动物园) lies in the Baiyun Mountain scenic area (白云山风景区) at the southern edge of the city. Work began in 1995 and the zoo opened on 24 May 1997, with a free-roaming wildlife section added in September 2000. Its predecessor was the old Dalian Zoo, where in 1972 Siberian tigers (东北虎) were bred successfully for the first time in China.

Fujiazhuang Park (傅家庄公园) on Binhai West Road (滨海西路) dates from 1980 and has an 800-metre beach used for sea bathing. People's Square is the third place the district government lists as a main attraction, alongside the zoo and Fujiazhuang Park.
