History

The name comes from Wanghuatai (望花台), 'terrace for viewing flowers'. By local tradition, eight families at the end of the Song dynasty lived on a raised terrace from which they could see lotus blooming in a pond called Lianhuapao (莲花泡). The area belonged to Fushun County of Fengtian Prefecture (奉天府) in 1908, came under Fushun city in 1937, and became a district in 1948. In 1999 the province moved Tayu (塔峪镇), Lishi (李石镇), Gaowan (高湾街道) and the Danan Korean-Manchu township (大南朝鲜族满族乡) into Wanghua; Lishi, Gaowan and Danan were then merged into Lishi subdistrict (李石街道).

What to see

The Fushun Lei Feng Memorial (抚顺市雷锋纪念馆) opened on 15 August 1965 at the place where Lei Feng (雷锋) died, on the eastern section of Leifeng Road (雷锋路), formerly Heping Road. It is made up of four parts: a monument, Lei Feng's grave, a statue and an exhibition hall on his life; the memorial holds more than 400 artefacts and documents and over 140 photographs. The grave and monument were listed as Liaoning provincial protected sites in 1979.

The Fushun West Open-pit Mine (抚顺西露天矿), which the district government calls the largest open-pit coal mine in Asia, lies in the district. So do the Fushun Aluminium Plant (抚顺铝厂), described as China's first aluminium plant, and Fushun Special Steel (抚顺特殊钢). The district government credits its plants with supplying high-strength stainless steel and superalloys for the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft and its rocket, and titanium alloy for the Shenzhou-6 cabin.

Getting oriented

Wanghua meets Xinfu District (新抚区) to the east and Shuncheng District (顺城区) to the northeast, Fushun County (抚顺县) to the south, Shenyang to the west and northwest, and Tieling County (铁岭县) to the north. The district government seat is 14.7 kilometres from the Fushun city government. Lagu Manchu Township (拉古满族乡) is one of its rural divisions.
